Catholic wedding

Steve说通常结婚party会有跳Chicken Dance and Pokey Hokey…

I never attended a Christian wedding in Penang, but the first wedding I attended in the US was a Catholic ceremony. Steve’s cousin’s daughter’s wedding was on July 14th.

We were ready to go… we met Steve’s sister and went to the church together. Sue, with her son and daughter, came in time, so we went there in her car. Steve introduced his relatives to me while in church… Steve’s father had two sisters and one of them was there (the other aunt passed away several years ago.) This is his aunt with her only daughter. The bride is the daughter of one of the daughters of the aunt who already passed away. That aunt had two sons and four daughters. These are the three oldest kids of Steve’s father and his father’s two sisters.

All of the guests, groomsmen, and groom went in the church before the wedding started at 1.30pm… the immediate family members entered the church at the start of the ceremony; here are the groom’s grandparents & parents, the bride’s mother, bridesmaids, ring bearer and flower girl… finally, the bride entered, escorted by her father. The priest began the wedding ceremony. When the ceremony is over, the bride and groom leave the church first, followed by the wedding party and close family. The last to leave are the guests…

Because the wedding reception wasn’t until 6.30pm, we killed three hours by having a meal and ice cream in restaurants, and nearby ‘sightseeing’ by car to the neighborhood where Steve & Sue grew up… We went back to the same church for the reception. There was a free photo booth… guests could have their photos taken and put them in a photo album for the bride & groom. All the guests took their seats in the hall where there were mementos for the guests to remember the wedding. The party started…the wedding party entered the reception hall in pairs; the last pair to enter was the bride and groom. A short speech was given by the maid-of-honor, and then the best man gave the toast. After that, the meal was served… then the bride and groom cut the cake and fed each other a piece. The first dance was for the bride and groom only. The second dance was for groomsmen and bridesmaids. The third dance was for the bride with her father and the groom with his mother. The fourth dance was for the parents of the bride and groom. After the fourth dance, all the guests could join in…

We left the party after we had two dances, because Sue needed to drive 3-1/2 hours to get home. So we left early and didn’t stay at the reception until the end… Steve said the custom at wedding receptions includes doing the Chicken Dance and the Hokey Pokey… Hmm…what is the Chicken Dance? I am so curious…
