070707

LouisCardinals(红鳥) baseball 比賽而来

Louis最出名的景点The Gateway Arch。

07/07/07 was a date this year with the same numbers repeated; did you do anything special that day?

Previously we thought to have a wedding party on this great day, but the nuns of Fo Guang Shan temple were not in town. So we didn’t have any special thing to do, but I would like to share our activities on that day to you…

We went to a Pool Party instead of our party. We were invited by a Chinese friend of Steve’s colleague. She gave the directions in email and Steve drove to the party venue. On the way, we saw this clock on the side of the road… We found the venue… My photo, the lady behind me is Steve’s colleague’s friend who is from Ipoh, Malaysia and has lived quite long in the US. The pool party had many foods because the invitation mentioned: bring your favorite dish to share… Steve asked me when I was looked around, “what do you see?” I replied, “counting people…haha!” There were around 15 white & black guys and 18 Asian guys. Most of the Asian guys are young boys and girls…I didn’t hear anyone speak Chinese… We were there about 2 and a half hours, but we didn’t see Steve’s colleague. We said goodbye to the owner and left…then we went downtown to see fireworks. After the Independence Day celebration of July 4, there are events every weekend through the first weekend of August.

Downtown is a little bit far and Steve was not sure how to get there, so we went by commuter train. I was new and this was my first time to go downtown for sightseeing. I was so curious about many things along the way…

I observed on the train… A group of people came in from a station, and a black man with 3 children got on. Two white men stood up from their seat to let them have seats. A young couple came in from another station and the black man in the first row stood up from his seat; he wanted the young lady to have a seat. That beautiful lady in the pink blouse rejected with a smile. The black man sat down in his seat again…he turned his face, smiling at the 3 children; they didn’t know each other… I don’t know, is there still racism in the US? I saw this and felt peaceful in that moment on that crowded train…

Many people wearing red shirts crowded onto the train; they were going to see and support the St. Louis baseball team, the Cardinals (a red bird)…

We were going out from the station…and saw the most famous attraction in St. Louis: The Gateway Arch. We wanted to go up to the top for sightseeing… Do you see the small windows at the top? After we went thru a series of security checks, we got into the Arch. We were lucky to get tickets for the tram to the top. We had time to go in the museum before our tram’s scheduled time. I didn’t find an attraction in the museum, but I saw a special ‘exhibit’ – this guy with a pair of shoes higher than mine while I was performing Chinese opera! Haha…

We saw this group of ladies with this type of costume; I don’t know, what tradition is this from?

It’s time for our tram… the tram has 8 small capsules; every capsule has 5 seats… Wow! We arrived at the top…this side has a stadium where they were playing the baseball game, the Old Cathedral, and the Historic Old Courthouse; Steve said we will visit them one day. On the other side is the Mississippi river, a Casino, the performance stage for the live bands; I saw a strange ship moving on the river, and I asked Steve, “what is the purpose of this ship?” Em…his answer was not the purpose of the ship that night… Can you guess what it was?

The end of the evening was a fireworks show… Wow! They look like many stars coming toward you… We were standing behind a fence and looking to the river where the fireworks were being launched…haha…the long deck of the ship is to shoot fireworks…
