Look Beyond the Surface

What a great play!

Steve and I went to watch a stage play reading, as I wanted to have a view before my play in May.
還記得我告訴你們,我應徵亞洲人演員,將在5月演話劇(英語)?為了想了解情况,昨天我和相公去看他們4月呈獻的話劇~關於販賣人口、推入火坑..

The actors acted out their parts, but without props or costumes.
The arts are not for entertainment, but to encourage dialogue about vital issues that affect us in our community.
短劇演完後,就讓大家對話。
原來這劇塲導演的劇是要提高人們對社會問題的醒覺,實在太好了!

"Solid Lines Productions is proud to present a staged reading of Untitled*, by Roger Erb, and DISCLOSURE, by Christopher LaBanca, as part of the Arts Against Trafficking series. These readings are sponsored by the St. Charles Coalition Against Trafficking.
Directed by Executive Director Christopher LaBanca, these readings will feature Vicky Chen, Laurell Stevenson, Jaz Tucker, and Minware Tutu. The short plays will be followed by a talk-back with the director and the cast, as well as professionals in the anti-trafficking field. Admission is free of charge.
Coordinated by the National Council of Jewish Women, and in partnership with the Coalition Against Trafficking and Exploitation, Covering House, Lindenwood University, Magdalene House, Missouri Department of Transportation, Rescue and Restore Coalition, Solid Lines Productions, and the St. Charles Coalition Against Trafficking, the Arts Against Trafficking series of 2017-2018 aims to raise awareness of human trafficking."

The talk-back was great. We got to become more aware this issue and learn more information.  Several members of the audience worked in crisis centers and education, and some were involved in lobbying the state legislature for stricter laws.

Below is from one of the information pamphlets handed out:
"Victims of human trafficking may look like many of people you help every day.

Look for the following clues:
...Evidence of being controlled
...Evidence of inability to move or leave job
...Bruises or other signs of physical abuse
...Fear or desperation
...Not speaking on own behalf
...Non-English speaking
...No passport or other forms of identification or documentation

What Can You Do?
...Become aware and ask questions

The previous play by the same director was "4.48 PSYCHOSIS - a beautiful and insightful look at depression and suicide. "

The next play - "We will see you at KDHX The Stage for PAPER ANGELS on Wednesday, May 23rd at 7pm. The specific and archetypal immigrant experience through a group of eight characters showing the aspirations and the helplessness of Chinese immigrants on Angel Island who want to improve their lives at the peril of risking everything, especially their own identity. "
