US - Iowa

This was my birthday road trip from Oct 7-13, headed north to Wisconsin, through Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota. We took Hwy 100 then 96 in IL to Keokuk, IA.

"Lock No. 19 is the largest lock on the Upper Mississippi River with a lift of 38.2 feet. There is a nice observation area. The lock activity can also be viewed from Victory Park and the old Mississippi River Bridge now used as a pedestrian viewing area."

Driving from the south across the small valley from the lower end of Snake Alley, can get a telephoto shot looking up the alley. No traffic back-ups to drive down.

Built in 1894 in Burlington, Snake Alley is unbelievably crooked.
Burlington has lots of interesting architecture to look at.

Stop by this historic spot in Louisa County, a swinging 262-foot bridge that dates to 1886, suspended across a ravine.

The Swinging Bridge or Lover's Leap Bridge.

Herbert Hoover National Historic Site.

When we stopped at Amana Colonies, it was early evening, so some stores were already closed.

52-acre Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.

This is their Japanese Garden.

A beautiful purple clematis attracted me.

Pike's Peak State Park.

Stand atop the 500 foot bluff for a breathtaking view and see the confluence of the Wisconsin and Mississippi rivers.

"The park is name after Lieutenant Zebulon Pike, sent by the government in 1805 to select a site for a military fort. Pike chose this site  but the government built the fort across the river."
We walked the trails in the park.

Along one of the walking trails in Effigy Mounds National Monument.

It is Yellow River Bridge trail.

Black Hawk Bridge in Lansing.
"The bridge cost $750,000 dollars to build it in 1931 but $4.2 million dollars to paint in 2013."

The view from the other side, looking back at Iowa from Wisconsin.

Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge, Highway 26 Overlook.

We headed to Minneapolis, MN.

We stayed at Microtel hotel in St. Paul. It has a weird mirror on the whole wall in the room.  I suspect it is a two way mirror!

We just did a little sightseeing in MN at the Minnehaha Falls in Minnehaha Park.

The Mississippi National River and Recreation Area.  Unfortunately, the visitor center and the nearby Science Center were closed this day.
