你學一種外語,多年沒用了,你就會忘了。
為什麽?
肌肉記憶比腦記憶好。
但肌肉的記憶不是也須要腦嗎?
誰知道原因?
Once you learned to swim, even though you haven't swam no matter how long, you still know how to swim when in the water.
You learned a foreign language, you haven't used for a while, you will lose it.
Why?
It's muscle memory is better than brain memory.
Didn't muscle memory depend on the brain too?
Who wants to explain it?
Steve panicked while we were snorkeling in Mexico a few years ago because he didn't know how to swim. After we got home, he signed up for swimming classes and has continued since then.
This time he signed up for a class on Saturdays at the community college near our house, and he can bring a guest to swim during the open sessions on Wednesdays and Thursdays. I have gone with him a few times. This one is six lanes x 75 feet pool.
I learned swimming when in high school. Even though I haven't swam often the past few years but I still know how to swim, thanks to muscle memory.
I always swim non-stop for 20-30 mins, then get out. I don't like soaking in the water too long, because the pool chemicals smell bad and make my hair stiff.

Swimming is a lot simpler than remembering a foreign language. There are a few body movements that you repeat over and over again. With a foreign language, you need to remember at least 1,000 vocabulary words, most of which you don't use very much.

How about if have about the same amount, something like 10 body movements vs 10 words speaking or writing?
If you used the same ten words a lot, you probably have a good chance of remembering them. There are over 10 Chinese words that I never forget (你好? 对不起。 吃饭。 不知道。 不会汉语。 开车开的慢。请慢说。)

I think because you still surrounding with Chinese. If I learn 10 Tamil words or other language which might not have a chance to use it. Few years later, I doubt I still can remember..
If you rinse your hair in the shower before you get in the pool, you're hair won't absorb nearly as many pool chemicals and your hair won't be as still. Even if you wear a swim cap, rinse your hair first. I did this when I used to swim and it made a BIG difference.

Hmm..I rinse my hair before get in the pool, maybe have difference but the chemicals are chemicals :)
For example, I practiced to perform a Teochew dialect Chinese opera ten years ago while in Malaysia, but now I still remember part of body movements but I totally forget the words/songs in that opera. Haha..
I usually rinse my hair before swimming. I still end up with porcupine hair for a couple of days after, even using conditioner.
