Conservation

Columbia Bottom Conservation Area

Sunflower fields

I saw two adults pick sunflowers, so I said to them: You are not suppose to pick the flowers.

Found a purse

I found a purse outside Aldi, I didn't see any contact number except those cards and some dollar bills in it. Thus, I passed it to one of Aldi staffs, hope the owner would claim it back.

My advice to everyone, write your cell number and put in your purse/wallet.

Look Beyond the Surface

What a great play!

Steve and I went to watch a stage play reading, as I wanted to have a view before my play in May.

The actors acted out their parts, but without props or costumes.
The arts are not for entertainment, but to encourage dialogue about vital issues that affect us in our community.

"Solid Lines Productions is proud to present a staged reading of Untitled*, by Roger Erb, and DISCLOSURE, by Christopher LaBanca, as part of the Arts Against Trafficking series. These readings are sponsored by the St. Charles Coalition Against Trafficking.
Directed by Executive Director Christopher LaBanca, these readings will feature Vicky Chen, Laurell Stevenson, Jaz Tucker, and Minware Tutu. The short plays will be followed by a talk-back with the director and the cast, as well as professionals in the anti-trafficking field. Admission is free of charge.
Coordinated by the National Council of Jewish Women, and in partnership with the Coalition Against Trafficking and Exploitation, Covering House, Lindenwood University, Magdalene House, Missouri Department of Transportation, Rescue and Restore Coalition, Solid Lines Productions, and the St. Charles Coalition Against Trafficking, the Arts Against Trafficking series of 2017-2018 aims to raise awareness of human trafficking."

The talk-back was great. We got to become more aware this issue and learn more information.  Several members of the audience worked in crisis centers and education, and some were involved in lobbying the state legislature for stricter laws.

Below is from one of the information pamphlets handed out:
"Victims of human trafficking may look like many of people you help every day.

Look for the following clues:
...Evidence of being controlled
...Evidence of inability to move or leave job
...Bruises or other signs of physical abuse
...Fear or desperation
...Not speaking on own behalf
...Non-English speaking
...No passport or other forms of identification or documentation

What Can You Do?
...Become aware and ask questions
...If you suspect human trafficking leave a tip

The previous play by the same director was "4.48 PSYCHOSIS - a beautiful and insightful look at depression and suicide. "

The next play - "We will see you at KDHX The Stage for PAPER ANGELS on Wednesday, May 23rd at 7pm. The specific and archetypal immigrant experience through a group of eight characters showing the aspirations and the helplessness of Chinese immigrants on Angel Island who want to improve their lives at the peril of risking everything, especially their own identity. "

Flight booking experience

If you want to book flight travel on your own, or know how to find the cheapest flights, or have problems, you can message me. I know some things and have some experience to share.

I just helped out a friend who missed the first leg of her flights.  She thought all her round trip flights were forfeited. However, she managed to re-book & just paid a little money after my advice.

Trump?

A tool

The first picture was taken in June 2013 in Penang. It is a street wall painting, but the basket is real. The second picture was taken by a friend recently, it seems the painting has changed a little bit.

When I saw this painting, the scenes of my childhood period flashed up..
We stayed in the upper floor of a rented house from before I was born until I was 7 or 8 year old. We had this fun tool - a basket with rope to buy things. Normally, those hawkers went around in their trishaws, going around the streets, selling breads, noodles, cakes, snacks, etc. Each had their own specific sound like a ringing a bell, honking a horn, wood, or voice to signal they were coming. When we heard them and wanted to buy something, we would just yell for them to stop. We put money in the basket, lowering the basket down with a rope. The hawker would put the things in the basket, and we would pull it up. That was really interesting, I liked to play with the tool.. down... up... I was young but the image still impressed.

I couldn't play with it anymore after we rented a whole house.

Nowadays, I don't think Penang has this scene anymore.
Is this the evolution of the individual's mindset or the evolution of society?

Musang King Durian

Your purchase is Power!

I like to buy organic fruits and vegetables, if possible, when I find them, even though they are costly.  I think to have healthy food is more important since I have the choice. I'd rather save my money and buy fewer unnecessary things, such as expensive clothes, bags, cosmetics, etc.

I found on the label when I consumed the last blueberry in this case:

"Your purchase is Power!
Buying these berries means:
*Protecting the environment through organic practices.
*Supporting family farmers and treating workers fairly and with dignity.
*Getting a tasty burst for your body."

BERSIH 4

Nathan, let's go to the BERSIH rally!

Asian & Pacific Islanders

I went to the event - "APIs For Black Lives" (API is Asian & Pacific Islanders), a white American friend was involved in pulling organizers together for it.

The host, Julia Ho:
'As a first-generation Taiwanese American living in St. Louis, I've noticed other API folks who have been politically silent since the Ferguson uprising. Some people say that they know nothing about the situation or feel unaware of how these events affect them. Others feel unwelcome in conversations related to race. This group, APIs (Asian Pacific Islanders) for Black Lives STL, has been working in partnership with the St. Louis Chapter of Organization for Chinese Americans (OCA) and members from OBS to create a two hour event in which we invite the St. Louis community - and in particular Asian Americans - to have a conversation about where non-black minorities fit in the context of Ferguson, and how to work and live together better.
Event Description:
APIs for Black Lives is an event that honors Asian and Pacific Islander (API) Heritage Month by uplifting histories of API and black communities united for justice. By sharing food, stories, and our connected and often erased histories of marginalization, activism, and solidarity, we hope to foster mutual understanding and develop solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.'

Part of one of the stories shared by one of the Chinese-Americans (she is going to study in Harvard University soon) struck me, kind of - when she was growing up, she was told by her mom not speak Mandarin on the street and don't invite friends for Chinese food... Now she thinks this is wrong. We can't pretend nothing happened and not talk about the matter.

I speak broken English, but I am still proud I can speak Malay, Mandarin and other dialects of Chinese. I didn't know how serious racial matters affected and suppressed those Chinese (or Asians) growing up here until I heard them.

Pray for Nepal

A few days ago I was discussing with Steve about visiting Bhutan, and also stopping in Nepal and India. The next day, we heard the news - the earthquake in Nepal.
It brought to mind my memories of backpacking with friends in Nepal in 2002. When the six of us arrived in Kathmandu that day, all the travellers were greeted by an organization with music and traditional dance. We were flattered. Such a coincidence, the government had a tourism program, and we got a gift and an invitation card.

We stayed in a hotel in the city. A friend read the invitation card and noticed there was a dinner in the city that day.
We asked the hotel staff and found the place was nearby, so we walked to it.

We were treated like VIPs, greeted with garlands, and tradition Nepalese hospitality.

Everyone sat on the carpet for dinner, and banana leaves were the dishes. They served the foods one-by-one. Everyone eating using their hands.

And their homemade wine was a very special experience!

It was my birthday when we were in Nepal - 17 days. My friends bought me a cake for celebration, I was really touched.

Nepal is beautiful and the people are friendly, I hope they recover soon.
Pray for Nepal and everyone.
