The purpose of life - Quintessence

I haven't written about a movie for a long time.
Right now, I would like to share some thoughts from this movie: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

'Spoiler alert'!

Walter Mitty works in Life magazine as a negative assets manager. He works really hard sometimes even when he is outside of the Life magazine building. And he likes daydreaming about adventures, but just daydreams. He never has been get out from his comfort zone.
A famous photojournalist, Sean O'Connell works with Walter Mitty, and sent a package. In it was a wallet as a gift to show his appreciation for Mitty's excellent work.
Mitty looked at the wallet and he found it imprinted with Life magazine's motto: To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind the walls, draw closer, to find each other, and to feel. That is the purpose of Life.
Walter Mitty

I like the quote.

The package also included negatives from Sean, and a note: "No. 25 is my best ever, quintessence of life, I think. I trust you'll get it where it needs to go. You always do."
But, he can't find negative no. 25 in the package.

As it is his responsibility to get the negative for the final cover of Life, he traveled to find Sean to ask about it.  He went to Greenland, Iceland, and Himalayas after he tracked down some people who had seen Sean. His journeys were very adventurous. When he finally found him, Sean is sitting with his camera gear, silent, patient and waiting for a rare snow leopard.

I like their conversation:
Sean: "They call the snow leopard the ghost cat. Never let itself be seen."
Walter: "Ghost cat?"
Sean: "Beautiful things don't ask for attention."

When the snow leopard is appearing:
Walter: "When you going to take it?"
Sean: "Sometimes I don't. If I like a moment, for me, personally, I don't like to have the distraction by the camera. I just want to stay in it."
Walter: "Stay in it?"
Sean: "Yeah. Right there, right here."

Sean gave us a lesson about quintessence, the purpose of life!
Sean

When Walter eventually found negative no. 25.
I asked Steve: What do you think the picture is?
Steve: I guess it's Walter's mother.
I: I think this too, but maybe it's Walter.

The end, we know it.
If you want to know, watch the movie.

iHat

After I watched the movie “Avatar” in 3D, I found its story about the greed and ignorance of some human beings. In order to get the resources from another planet, humans just destroy their environment. On the other hand, the aliens are living in natural way. They would not kill beings without reason, even though they need to hunt for food, they are grateful to those beings. They also have the ability to connect to plants and animals, understanding and accepting each other. They appreciate each other staying together there.

Another thing, it lets me think about human creativity in science and technology…

Movies are an entertainer for the eyes and ears, especially in 3D. We put on the glasses for the 3D movie, and we experience close to living pictures.

I imagine at movies in the future; we will put on an ‘iHat’. We will experience the same emotions, like joy, anger, sadness, happiness, etc., as the characters in the movie, and also the feelings like kissing, hugging, being beaten, being killed, etc, all from the script of the movie… After the ending, you take off the iHat, and you are back to the real world in the theater. Do you think it is possible to have this kind of creation?

I think nothing is impossible in the future if the earth still exists for several years.

'Crash'

Recently, we watched the DVD ‘Crash’, which won 3 Academy Awards, including Best Picture in 2005. The film content is about the gray area between different races, the characters struggling and subjective problems from races colliding. However, the reality of their wrong behaviors is because they were filled with anger, hatred, worries, fear, loss, etc. Basically, these are not really caused by race issues.

’ll mention one of the points expressed in the film – a white cop’s father is sick and he is seeking approval from insurance for medicine, but the staff, a black lady, denied his request. So, he was angry and spoke roughly to this black lady. He was then filled with anger when he went on duty and stopped a car with a black couple. The black wife said something that angered him, so he purposely checked their whole body. The black husband endured seeing this cop touching his wife’s private parts. After that, his wife was very sad and angry because he didn’t do anything and he even apologized to that cop. The next day, she went to her husband’s office and they had an argument again. She got angrier and drove away. On her way she got into an accident and her car flipped upside down with gas leaking out. As that white cop was on duty and saw the accident, he rushed to help. When she noticed who he was, she didn’t want him to touch her. However, he softly said he really meant to help her out. Finally, he tried his best, even though he knew that he might lose his life, and pulled her out before the explosion. When they looked at each other after they were safe, was she so grateful that it diminished the hate caused by the insult? Was his kindness already putting out the fire of anger?

There are some scenes in this movie about the issues between different races that cause us to think deep…

Comedy movies

Sometimes, I don’t like watching ‘nonsense’ comedians, like Stephen Chow’s movies. Once, after Steve purchased online one of his DVDs, ‘Kung Fu Hustle’, I mentioned that his movies are not worth watching. Steve said “why not?” He likes comedy movies, as they are entertaining and funny, without having to think too much. It is relaxing. I think it is true also, but I prefer comedies and meaningful movies like Michael Hui with his brothers’ films in the 70s-80s. Some of the pictures reflected social phenomena that led up to meaningful afterthoughts!

Making a choice

Everyone has some big or small issues in their life when they need to make a decision. When we have a choice, it is difficult to decide what to choose. Choose A? Or choose B? Maybe choose C? Sometimes we are afraid because we don’t know: what will the result be after making a choice?

A movie called ‘The Family Man’ is the story about a man (Nicholas Cage) who chose to part with his girlfriend twelve years earlier. He chose to go to London, leaving behind the woman he loved. He was a talented businessman and became the president of a company. He had his sport car and nice apartment… One day, he wakes up and finds himself on a different bed with his former girlfriend. He sees a little girl and a baby boy in that little house. He was shocked; wondering what has happened to him? He used a few days to check things out; nobody knows he is a president in that big business building! However, he finds a video tape showing his proposal to his girlfriend… their wedding pictures, pictures of himself with the little girl and baby boy… He is a tire salesman…he became a dad and has to share the duties of taking care of their kids with his wife. He earns an average income and he wishes to go back to his rich identity… One day, he meets the boss of the business he ran, but the boss doesn’t know him. He doesn’t give up, and tries approaching and showing his talent - the boss wants to hire him… However, his wife doesn’t want to let go of her job and wanted a normal family life; she doesn’t want to follow him to the big city. He falls into a dilemma: to choose to give up his wife and kids or to choose his career… He woke up to a phoned call reminding him of an important meeting, and found that he was back in his own nice apartment with his sport car… He realized that family is most important to him; he misses that family life… He attempts to find his former girlfriend…

When you make a choice, it is like an adventure. You never know where the future path will lead you, and you can’t go back to the original place at that time and situation…

What were you thinking?

After PN read my short blog about global warming posted in September, she commented and recommended I watch ‘An Inconvenient Truth’. Later, we bought this DVD in a shop but hadn’t yet opened it, because we chose to watch other DVDs that we continued bringing back home. (Mankind seems to have a lot of bad habits like this. Global warming? This is not my business/issue; don’t worry about it yet!) Yesterday, we didn’t have much choice; some DVDs I had watched but Steve hadn’t and some DVDs I haven’t watched but Steve already had… Then we chose this DVD that both of us haven’t watched yet…

After we watched it, I liked the person who talked about the climate crisis, Al Gore, who is the former Vice President of America. Unfortunately, he lost the presidential election to George Bush. I think if Al Gore had become the president, he probably wouldn’t have gone to war with other countries?

We really need to take care of our big environment… I hope a sentence in this DVD will remind us: “Future generations may well have occasion to ask themselves, ‘What were our parents thinking? Why they didn’t wake up when they had a chance?’ We have to hear that question from them, now.”

This is the link.

Real world

We just watched a DVD of 'A Beautiful Mind' which won 4 Academy Awards in 2001: Best picture, best director (Ron Howard), best producer (Brian Grazer) and best supporting actress (Jennifer Connelly).

It is a true story of the inner world of Dr. John Forbes Nash who is a brilliant mathematician… His mind was always filled with mathematical theories but little comprehension of social interaction. When he was in the university, a roommate with a personality opposite his came in to his world… After he graduated and became a professor, a secret agent came to him, and he becomes a spy, decoding hidden messages… He again met the roommate, this time with a little girl; she has no parents, but is the niece of his roommate… During this, he also meets a lady who is his student. They fall in love and get married… But his life is always on the brink with these three persons: the secret agent, his former roommate and the roommate’s niece. He becomes entangled in a mysterious conspiracy… He is admitted to a psychiatric hospital, but couldn’t be healed, because he thought all three of these persons and events were real… His wife never gave up on him and helped him get back to his life as a professor again… In 1994, he won the Nobel Prize in Economics. In fact, he still had paranoid schizophrenia but he got better at trying to conquer it… He said the only reason he won the Nobel Prize was because love; love from his wife!

Paranoia is a mental disorder symptom, it is not like some people told that they be bewitched. A person who has schizophrenia needs much love and support from their family and friends!

I think...

We chose a couple of DVDs in the book store; one of them is 'Farewell, My Concubine'. When we played this DVD, I recognized it as <霸王别姬> in Chinese, which I had seen before. This film won Best Picture at the Cannes Film Festival in 1993. It contains many meaningful messages. I’ve had many thoughts after I watched it the second time:

The Peking opera’s tale of … I think…the concubine of the king knew that the king would lose power and she would become the bondservant or concubine of another. In order to prove her loyalty, chastity and faithfulness, she killed herself by sword.

The film’s tale of … I think…the old-style, rigorous rules in Peking opera training, a kid was frightened of his master’s punishment after he tried to escape from the group, so he hung himself. A woman was a prostitute, but she was brave enough to fight her fate and wanted to have a peaceful married life. But she was still jeered by people and betrayed by her husband. She hung herself because she felt hopeless that she couldn’t be accepted by anyone. A boy, trained to be a ‘female’ character in opera, became famous playing the concubine, but he couldn’t avoid being abused by people in power. Even though he wanted to play opera all his life, many people already lacked interest in it after the Cultural Revolution, and so there was no audience or appreciation in modern times. He felt all of his fame and fortune was gone and killed himself with a real sword while playing the concubine.

The tale in real life…the actor in the film who played the concubine is Leslie Cheung. He was a popular star with good fame and fortune but he committed suicide on April 1, 2003. Some might say he had love relationship problems… I think…he might have lost the ability to love himself…

Good movie

The Story of the Weeping Camel,这两部是朋友介绍的好电影。

The Story of the Weeping Camel

The Five People You Meet in Heaven,是我要介绍给你的 – 很好的电影。

The Five People You Meet in Heaven

We bought some DVDs recently; a few purchased from internet and a few purchased in stores. We watched Groundhog Day and The Story of the Weeping Camel last week; these two good movies were recommended by friends. One of the scenes in Groundhog Day reminded me a poem by someone.

And one of the conversations from this movie leaves you thinking: What would you do if you were stuck one place and everyday were exactly the same and nothing that you did mattered?

The Story of the Weeping Camel shows the life of a Mongolian family graphically and openly. Either human or animal also has their own emotions; the camel was healed by music after it was hurt by a hard delivery of a calf.

We also watched The Five People You Meet in Heaven this week. This is a very good movie which I want to recommend to you.

The Five People You Meet in Heaven touched me deeply and the tears were flowing. It is about a man who passes through his life without awareness. After dying, he came to heaven and meets five people who have been in his life. When he was alive, he didn’t realize those people were in his life to teach him lessons about life… His life lessons: life is not always fair, sacrifice, forgiveness, love, the meaning of task…
